Lions Pitch a Shutout

By Stephen Larkin
MEDIA - Although the offense performed well as usual, the Roaring Lions defense deserves credit as well for this win. The last time the Lions held an opponent to zero points was last year’s season opener against Strath Haven. Marple was able generate 201 yards of total offense but the defense held firm on several third and fourth down attempts and kept the Tigers off the score board. Marple moved the ball well on their first possession down to the Lions 20 yard line. The Tigers Adam Fender attempted a 28 yard field goal but was unsuccessful. The Lions wasted no time, getting on the board in two plays. Matt Atkinson started off with a quarterback keeper for 15 yards. Jerry Boyer took the next play 66 yards for the game’s first touchdown. The final score of the half came when Juhawn Young powered into the endzone from the 1 yard.

The second quarter had no scoring, although the Lions threatened once midway through the period. That drive started when Jeremiah Green recovered a fumble that was extended by a Marple face masking penalty. The Lions had a Boyer touchdown called back on a motion penalty. The Lions were forced to turn the ball over on downs two plays later when Matt Bundy was unable to haul in an Atkinson pass. The first half ended with the Lions up by a score of 14-0.

The Lions opened the second half with a 4 yard Boyer run capping a nice drive. The drive was sparked in part by a big third and long conversion on a reception by Phil Barbieri in the first series. The lions scored again when Matt Atkinson connected with Matt Bundy for a 38 yard strike. Bundy got behind the defense and ran under Atkinson’s pass for an easy score. Adam Yee scored the game’s final touchdown with an untouched 8 yard run. Atkinson went 8-12 with one TD and no interceptions, as well as 78 yards on the ground, another fine performance from our quarterback.
