Haverford Summary

By Stephen Larkin
MEDIA - Saturday’s Lions vs. Fords game was a barn burner, especially in the second half. The game was described by many who saw it as one of the most exciting high school football games they had ever seen. The first half was largely a defensive battle. Haverford racked up some yards but the Penncrest D was able to hold them to a pair of field goals. Late in the second quarter, Ricky Bailey returned a fumble 1 yard for a touchdown. The Lions were unable to convert the extra point on the ground and the game was tied.

The third quarter belonged largely to the Fords who scored twice, one by Dante Pergolese and the other by QB Liam McGrath. The Fords had their running game working piling up 318 yards on the ground. With Jerry Boyer on the sidelines injured, Penncrest’s running game was missing one of its weapons, but Avery Coleman, Tyriq Kershaw, Brandon Batipps, Adam Yee and Matt Atkinson combined for 164 yards on the ground.

The forth quarter began with our Roaring Lions down by two touchdowns. Matt Atkinson at QB lead the assault, throwing TD passes of 3 yards to Phil Barbieri and 1 yard to Rick Bailey. The score was tied with 2:50 left to play. The Fords drove down the field and scored what they thought was the game winner with 1:25 left to play. Their celebration in the end zone was deemed excessive and they were penalized adding the yards to the PAT kick. Penncrest was able to block the kick from Martin. Penncrest drove down the field in one minute and scored on an 11 yard run by Adam Yee. Miller was perfect on the first two PAT’s but this time Haverford was able to block his attempt. On to overtime!

In overtime each team gets 4 plays to score from the 10 yard line. Haverford went first and scored on the first play on a 10 yard run by Pergolese. Martin added the extra point. Penncrest scored on an 8 yard scramble by Atkinson and a two yard pass to Matt Bundy. Coach Graham made a gutsy decision and decided to lay it all on the line and go for two. Matt Atkinson threw a strike to Bailey in the endzone and the game was over. Final score Lions 34-Fords 33.

The offense was lead by Matt Atkinson with his second consecutive 100 yard passing game. Rick Bailey was the leading receiver with 64 yards on 5 catches. Avery Coleman was the leading rusher with 75 yards on 5 carries.
